The 1st Harrow Weald Scout Group was first formed in 1908 by
William Henry Peers the Vicar of the All Saints Church and was known as the All
Saints Scout Troop. In 1909 when most scout troops started to register the
name was changed to the 1st Harrow Weald. It is thus one of the oldest
scout groups still running in the world.
This information is held in the Church records and is also on
their website www.allsaintsharrowweald.org/page.asp?id=71
It was originally based at the Church, later moving into a farm
barn off Harrow Weald where Waitrose is now. In 1936, the group moved to its current location at the
top of Clamp hill.
At Clamp Hill the Group had about 7 acres of land including the pond
on Brooks hill, which it rented from the local land owner for a peppercorn rent,
in the 1960's when peppercorns were hard to get hold of this changed to a
shilling a year. some time in the 1980's the land owner died and in the
closure of the estates the group was given an acre of land around the hut
freehold if it released the rest of the land for development.
At first meetings were held in a wooden hut on the site, but in
1954 the 'New' HQ was completed at a cost of £300 this being a second hand Nissan
hut from RAF Uxbridge with a new brick wall at each end it had no mains drainage
and the only facilities were a chemical toilet and a kitchen with a cold water
tap. Heating was by log fire.
It has since been extended to accommodate a Kitchen, toilets and
storeroom on one side and mains drainage installed. When the hole for the
connection of the sewer and drains was dug in clamp hill, council records showed
that the main sewer was 24 feet down, it in fact turned out to be over 40 feet
down. a very deep hole!
In 1999-2000 a large amount of money was spent on the building
replacing the end wall including under pinning it and replacing the roof there
is a program in place at the moment to replace the kitchen (the old one having
been removed) and the old rooms at the back of the hall are being renewed to
create an office all the leaders can use, an extra storeroom and sleeping accommodation
to allow Beaver sleepovers and open the hall up to all of the group.
